Electrical PAT Testing
Portable Appliance Testing is a routine examination of your electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use.
Hazards caused by faulty electrical appliances can be extremely dangerous and even life threatening, but they are preventable.
Employers and private landlords have a legal responsibility to keep your employees and tenants safe and PAT testing is one of the most effective ways to do this. PAT testing complies with The Housing (Scotland) Act of 2006 and Health and Safety at Work regulations.
The test ensures electrical equipment is safe to use by checking for damage or malfunction. Any portable appliances including fridges, ovens, cookers, washing machines should be included in the inspection. Our fully qualified assessors will carry out a visual inspection and a more in-depth check using specialist equipment which tests continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance checks.
PAT testing complies with the following regulations:
- The Housing (Scotland) Act of 2006
- Health and Safety Act of 1974
- Electricity at work Regulations of 1989
- Provision and Use of Work Equipment regulations of 1998
- Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations of 1999.
To ensure the safety of appliances and therefore tenants or employees is upheld, PAT tests must be carried out annually.

I was happy with the service I received from Energy Cert Scotland for my EPC: courteous, efficient, knowledgeable and reasonably-priced.
£44 for an EPC in Kirkcaldy, I was quoted double that elsewhere. Not just a good price but a friendly service too.
Solicitor told me I needed an EPC the day before my house sale to the council was due to conclude. Simon came out exactly at the time stated and ensured I had the certificate same day. Great service!
PAT Testing FAQs
Waht is a PAT test?
Portable appliance testing (PAT) is an examination of electrical equipment to make sure they are safe to use. This consists of visual inspections and electrical testing of appliances.
Who can carry out a PAT test?
Although there is no legal qualification required, your PAT tester must be competent to test your electrical equipment.
What Kind of devices and appliances need PAT tests?
One of the big myths surrounding PAT is that we only have to test items with a plug. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires PAT testing for all electrical 'Systems' at work and therefore the law does not differentiate between equipment with a plug and that which is wired directly to the supply.
